Things Your Dentist Wishes You Would Stop Doing

While you might know that taking care of your teeth is important, chances are you skimp on daily dental hygiene habits that you shouldn’t be. In fact, there are plenty of things that your dentist wishes you would stop doing.

1. Lying About Flossing.

Not telling the truth to your dentist is not going to help. Be honest with your dentist and they will be able to make better judgments about your dental health. If you are regularly flossing and it is not showing, then you are likely doing it wrong. Your dentist will be able to show you how to properly floss, but only if they know to teach you.

2. Using At-Home Whitening Kits.

The fact is, at-home whitening kits are not useful at all. In fact, they can actually be harmful in many instances. By bleaching your teeth using various at-home kits, you could end up damaging the enamel on your teeth which can cause serious and irreparable damage. Along with this, it can cause gum recession and other issues. Instead, you will want to make an appointment with your dentist and he or she will be able to discuss much safer alternatives.

3. Drinking Acidic Drinks All The Time.

While you might want to ‘flavor’ up your water, it is generally not a good idea to do it with citrus fruits. Infusing your water with lemons can really degrade your dental health without you even realizing it. The fact is, acidic foods and drinks are not good for your teeth. Creating an acidic environment in your mouth is something that can lead to tooth decay and permanent enamel damage. Instead, you want to look to avoid acidic drinks including coffee, tea, and other sugary drinks. Try to drink plain water much more often as it is going to help you generate more saliva which can improve your dental health considerably.

4. Get An Electric Toothbrush.

By getting yourself an electric toothbrush, you will take a lot of the work involved with brushing your teeth out of the equation. This alone is going to make it much more likely that you regularly brush your teeth and that you do it properly. It is very difficult to brush your teeth improperly with an electric toothbrush which is typically what makes it the superior option. This way, you will be able to make the process as easy as possible.

5. Avoid Chewing On Ice.

If you have a habit of chewing on ice or other things that are hard, you want to stop immediately. Chewing on anything with a hard surface is going to be likely to damage your teeth.

6. Avoiding Fluoride Toothpaste or Replacing Your Toothpaste With Fads.

This is a big one that dentists absolutely hate. If you are replacing your fluoride toothpaste with no-fluoride toothpaste or even worse, replacing your toothpaste with the latest health fad like oil pulling, you need to stop it. It is essential to use fluoride toothpaste to keep your teeth as healthy and strong as possible. Oil pulling is not scientifically proven and it is certainly not a substitute for brushing your teeth with toothpaste.

7. Not Taking Medicine As Prescribed.

If your dentist tells you to use antibiotics to get rid of an infection or to suppress an infection, you want to do it for as long as the dentist tells you to do it. Not taking medication as prescribed leads to ineffectiveness which can lead to dental problems that your dentist was trying to avoid entirely, to begin with.

As you can see, there is a lot that your dentist likely wants you to stop doing for the betterment of your dental health.
